The Paint Program the CPC Never Had

Simulant CPC Paint (SimPaint): a complete pixel-art and painting package for the Amstrad CPC, heavily inspired by Deluxe Paint on the Amiga.

A menu bar along the top, a tool strip down the side, the palette at your fingertips and single-key shortcuts for every tool, laid out the way Deluxe Paint taught a generation of pixel artists to work. Pick up any part of your picture as a brush and paint with it using every tool.

SimPaint runs on every Amstrad CPC, from a 464 with a disc drive to the 6128 Plus with its 4096-colour palette, and makes the most of whatever memory your machine has. It works with keys, a joystick or a mouse, in English, Spanish, French or German.

Heavily Inspired by Deluxe Paint

Deluxe Paint set the standard for how a paint program should feel: pick a tool, pick a brush, pick a colour and draw, with nothing in the way. SimPaint brings that way of working to the Amstrad CPC, built from the ground up for its screen modes, palettes and memory.

• Single-key tool shortcuts, as in Deluxe Paint.
• Pick-up brushes - grab part of the picture and paint with it.
• A split-screen magnifier - the whole picture and a close-up side by side, and you can draw in either.
• Left button paints the ink, right button the paper, with every tool.

Everything You Need to Paint

1. Drawing Tools

Freehand, Line, Curve, Rectangle, Circle, Ellipse and Polygon (hollow or filled), Airbrush, Fill and Mirror for symmetrical drawing. Shapes can be kept square, round or at 45 degrees as you drag.

2. Brushes

Square and round brushes in a range of sizes, and custom brushes picked up from your picture that you can flip and resize. Clone copies one part of the picture to another as you paint.

3. Text and Fonts

Type straight onto your picture in a choice of sizes and spacing, in the CPC's own font or one loaded from disc. Three original fonts are included.

4. Fill Patterns

Fill regions with textures and repeating patterns, loaded from OCP Art Studio pattern sets. Two original pattern sets are included.

5. Magnifier, Zoom and Grid

A split-screen magnifier for close-up work, Zoom to enlarge the whole canvas, and a snap-to grid you can adjust.

6. Colours and Palettes

Mix your own inks from the CPC's 27 colours, or from 4096 on a 6128 Plus. Pick up any colour from the picture, and load or save palettes in OCP Art Studio format.

7. All Three Screen Modes

Paint in MODE 0 (160 x 200, 16 colours), MODE 1 (320 x 200, 4 colours) or MODE 2 (640 x 200, 2 colours), and convert a picture from one mode to another. Every tool works in every mode.

8. Undo, Effects and Transforms

Multi-level Undo and Redo on a 128K machine. Flip, rotate, crop and scroll the whole picture, and colour effects to lighten, darken, grey or invert every ink.

9. Full-Screen Overscan Pictures

Open, paint and save overscan pictures that fill the whole screen, borders included, and turn any picture into one. Saved overscans run on their own from BASIC.

10. Files and Formats

SimPaint opens OCP Art Studio, FreeOCP and ConvImgCpc pictures, and saves in OCP Art Studio's format or packed to save disc space. Use either drive, and keep your pictures on as many discs as you like.

Made for the 6128 Plus

On a 6128 Plus, SimPaint chooses your inks from the full 4096-colour palette, uses a smooth hardware pointer, and keeps the menu bar above the whole picture. Plus pictures still open on any CPC, shown in its own colours.

Four Languages

The whole program runs in English, Spanish, French or German, built-in help pages included, and you can switch language at any time.

Art Disc Included

A second disc full of pictures and materials to explore and build on:

• 15 example pictures - showing off all three screen modes, 4096-colour Plus pictures and full-screen overscans.
• Colour-cycling pictures - animated by their palettes, as in classic paint programs.
• 36 brushes - ready-made brushes to stamp and build scenes with, every one drawn in SimPaint itself.
• Fonts and fill patterns.
• A picture show that runs on any CPC, even without SimPaint.

Good to Know

SimPaint is built to make the most of every CPC, and to be clear about what each machine can do.

Every CPC, every mode. A 464 or 664 (64K) gets the drawing tools in all three modes, with one level of undo, and reads parts of SimPaint from its disc as needed.

More with 128K. A 6128, a 6128 Plus, or a 464/664 with a 64K RAM expansion adds multi-level undo and redo, Curve, Clone, filled polygons, fonts, fill patterns, larger brushes and whole-page overscan editing, and painting never waits for the disc.

Even more with expansion RAM. With a 256K or 512K expansion, the SimPaint disc can come out once your picture is up.

Mouse optional. Everything works from the keyboard or a joystick. AMX / Genius and SYMBiFACE II mice are supported.

System Requirements

• Computer: Any Amstrad CPC (464, 664, 6128) or 6128 Plus.
• Disc drive: An internal or external disc drive (such as the DDI-1), or a Gotek with FlashFloppy.
• CPC disc images (.DSK): Write them to real 3" floppies, or copy them onto a Gotek with FlashFloppy, then load them on your CPC.
• 128K features: Need a 6128, a 6128 Plus, or a 464/664 with a 64K RAM expansion.
• 4096-colour palettes and the hardware pointer: Need a 6128 Plus.
• Mouse (optional): AMX / Genius mouse or SYMBiFACE II.
